WHY A DOG

And through the babble, unrunged tongues ring indiscernibly through towering rubble:  Dog squats, unknowingly, unaffected, sincere.  The blasphemous tribe of Man falls.   Man continues to build his towers and walls - sometimes Dog helps and sometimes Dog just sits - - - still, knowingly than before, irreverently simple.

Our world is a world of Dogs.  Revolving, evolving, involving, like man himself.  Red Dogs and blue Dogs and a lot of black Dogs.  Bicolored, tricolored, or solid white.  Mongrels, dingoes, purebreds.

More variations than any other animal on the earth, the Dog chooses man - to serve, to befriend, to coexist - without expectation, without apology.  Man learns to communicate with this unconditional companion;  teaches him, disciplines him, and mythologizes his genesis.

As weapons of war or tokens of peace, chessmen or talismen;  tractors;  shovels;  scarecrows;  engines;  snowmobiles; and handmuffs - Dogs have provided for humankind.  It is the Dog's many and diversified chores, the unkennelling of the Dogs which makes each breed admittedly unique, practical and appropriate.  Sighthounds;  mastiffs;  nordics;  gundogs;  scenthounds;  toydogs;  flock guardians;  herders;  terriers;  pariahs;  and even mongrels.

Herds of sheepless bleary-eyed shepherds, frantic and bankrupt butchers, frost-bitten Eskimos, fat-rat-owning farmers, scalped or starving pioneers - the likely result had Dog not joined man's forces.

Man and Dog continue to enjoy a reciprocally pleasing and dependent relationship.  When our eyes fail, when our body sleeps, when our bed is cold, when our child is lost, when our critics curdle, when our therapist vacations, our Dogs are there - as miraculous a gift to mankind as laughter itself.

And with Dog, our Dog, in its many moods we laugh, cry, think, love;  decidely unaffected by our human follies.  Like mutts muddling through puddles of primordial poop, we survive.  Our Dogs, gratefully indiscriminate and unbiased, free us - uncomplicating the puzzles of our twentieth-century world and reteaching us the simplicity and unqualified love that only children know.
